  • Jason Johnson Brings Knoxville to Its Feet with Nationals Win!

    In a race that will go down as one of the best ever run at the Knoxville Raceway, the 56th annual 5-hour ENERGY Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores found a new champion as “The Ragin’ Cajun” Jason Johnson brought a near capacity crowd to their feet with a hair raising battle with Donny Schatz to claim Sprint Car racing’s biggest prize.

    “Parked it. B.C.!” screamed the Louisiana native as he immediately dedicated his win to Bryan Clauson.

    Asked about his nearly race long battle with the nine-time Knoxville Nationals Champion; Johnson stated, “I wasn’t giving up. I mean, this is the biggest race of the year, and the biggest race of my career. It was a golden opportunity, and I needed to make the most of it and I know he wasn’t happy with me for crowding him but $!&% I wanted to win.”

    Bringing up a comment by Jason under the break of needing the second half to go with as few cautions as possible, Johnson explained, “It really made a difference. My guys gave me a great racecar. I was worried about blistering my tires, but I’ve got to thank my fellow competitor, Shane Stewart. I’ve spent a lot of time talking with him about how to race this track, and I was just trying to stay patient and run him [Donny Schatz] down and when I got by him, I stayed patient for a few laps but I just couldn’t stay patient anymore. It was time to go.”

    While Jason occupied the outside of the front row, it was Daryn Pittman who took off with the race lead with Jason Johnson in tow. Working to third on the second round, Donny Schatz worked smoothly around the bottom of the Knoxville Raceway with Jason Johnson to his front.

    Coming up on the tenth lap, the leaders began closing in on the back of the field. Giving Johnson the advantage to close the gap, the MVT No. 41 worked the cushion as Pittman rolled the bottom side. Completing the ninth circuit, Pittman came very close to a slower car at the bottom of turn four, just as Jason Johnson shot off the fourth turn. Closing more on the tenth round, Johnson made a break for the lead on Lap 11.

    Off the fourth turn, the cushion was the line for Jason to grab the point, but it would be short lived as Pittman drove back around the Priority Aviation No. 41 to lead Lap 12. With the Bad Boy Buggies No. 15 taking over the runner-up spot in the mix, Schatz brought a full head of steam behind him to grab the top spot on the Lap 13.

    Putting the Great Clips No. 9 to third, Johnson returned to the cushion with Schatz in the crosshairs.

    The caution flew on lap 16 for Craig Dollansky, who suffered a failed engine. Johnson rolled the center of the first turn to no avail as Kerry Madsen made his presence known with a high side pass off the second turn to grab third from Pittman in the Keneric Racing No. 1AUS. Struggling to get up to speed, Pittman ended up three wide to hold onto the fourth spot. Finally fighting off the challenge, Pittman went to work to regain lost ground.

    Still keeping pace with Schatz for the lead, Johnson began searching around the track, vacating the cushion as the mandatory caution flew on Lap 26.

    With adjustments made, the field went back to green with Johnson on a mission…keeping pace with Schatz as Kerry Madsen worked to get around the pair. Going to the cushion, Johnson built his momentum, taking the race lead off the fourth turn of the 27th lap.

    Side-by-side for several laps, Donny worked the bottom side as Johnson continued on the cushion. Pulling away slowly from the No. 15, Johnson found traffic on Lap 33. Nearly climbing the wall off the fourth turn on Lap 34, the bobble allowed Schatz to bring the No. 41 back into his grasp.

    Under a second behind, Schatz had his hands full as Kerry Madsen powered to by the No. 15 on Lap 38.

    Into the final ten rounds, the leaders found themselves in heavy traffic as the race for second heated up again with Schatz retaking the spot on Lap 41. Carrying a huge run into the second spot, the race of the lead was on. On trip No. 44 around Knoxville, the slide jobs came, as Schatz delivered an onslaught of haymaker moves with Johnson returning in kind.

    With under five laps to go, the scream of the crowd roared louder than the cars as Johnson ran the right rear of his No. 41 on the ragged edge with traffic about to come into play. With three laps to go, off the fourth turn, Johnson nearly tagged the wall. The bobble was just what Donny needed as the No. 15 was ferocious around the bottom of the Knoxville Raceway.

    To the white flag, the stage was set as Johnson entered the final two turns. Powering the bottom side, it was all or nothing as Donny gave it one last run, but it was not to be as Jason Johnson worked to the checkered flag a mere .168 seconds over the nine-time champion. The win is also Johnson’s third at the Knoxville Raceway in 410cid competition.

    Donny’s runner-up finish is the 12th time in as many years that Schatz has been on the podium at the Knoxville Nationals. “We did everything we could,” he said. “Jason [Johnson] did a great job. I didn’t think you could run that hard a pace for 50 laps, but he did, and once he got out there, I tried everything to catch him and just couldn’t do it,” commented Schatz from the second podium step.

    Running in the top-five just over half the race, Oklahoma’s Shane Stewart worked to the final podium step in the Larson/Marks Racing No. 2s, despite suffering an engine miscue in the latter part of the race. “I actually have to say thanks to Justin (Marks) and Kyle (Larson),” he said. “Justin had a tremendous day today, and we were hoping to carry that through tonight, but my car was really, really, good. We actually lost a cylinder about halfway through the end of the last segment, and just had to try to hang on, but congratulations to Jason, Bobbi, and his whole clan. It’s a huge race to win, and a hard one to win, and he did a great job.”

    After leading the opening rounds, Daryn Pittman ended up fourth. Having to race his way in through the B-Feature, Kyle Larson tore a path through the field from 21st to fifth in the Finley Farms Special No. 57.

    Jamie Veal crossed as the highest finishing Australian with a sixth place run with Chad Kemenah seventh. Greg Hodnett was eighth with Ian Madsen ninth. The top ten rounded out with David Gravel.

    Starting off with the E-Feature, Jon Agan led wire to wire, with the D-Feature won by Austin McCarl. In the C-Feature, the top spot went to Davey Heskin. In the non-stop, 22 lap B-Feature, it was Kyle Larson who grabbed the win.

    Best appearing car of this year’s 5-hour ENERGY Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores was the Blazin’ Racing No. 82 driven by Dusty Zomer. Best appearing crew was won by the team of the Josh Baughman Racing No. 17. Each team received $500.

    Being interviewed prior to the race, Greg McCormick with the Blazin’ Racing Team, let everyone know that the money was to be donated to the family of Bryan Clauson. The night’s 50/50 winner donated their winnings, worth $20,560, to the Clauson family as well.

    Rookie of the Year honors went to Matt Juhl in the Octane Ink No. 09. Juhl advanced from the C-Feature to finish 16th in the ‘B’. The Jesse Hockett Mr. Sprint Car Award presented by Cox Fabrication was awarded to Jamie Veal, who is the first Australian to earn the title since it began in 2002. The 2016 Mechanic of the race was earned by JJR Crew Chief, Phil Dietz.

  • Kane Wins The Battle and The NSSS War

    Queenslander Darren Kane drove his #36 Nissan Ultima bodied Super Sedan into the history books at Speedway City as he won a dramatic A-Main at the final round of the National Super Sedan Series (NSSS). In what was a nail bitting finish to the series the victory also saw Kane clinch his fifth NSSS Title over South Australian Dave Gartner, who unfortunately failed to finish the final after a massive hit to the turn one concrete wall.

    The huge Easter Sunday crowd were treated to some top class Sedan racing throughout the night with the series lead changing on several occasions. In fact going into the final Kane only led Gartner by 4 points setting up a winner take all scenario for the 40 lap final.

    Going into the final Tasmanian Brad Smith was a red hot favourite having secured two heat wins and the Super 7’s but his quest for the round win ended on lap one as he slammed the front straight wall. Smith was able to re-join at the tail of the field but he would never recover.

    From this point Kane would actually lead the entire race journey but it was far from a boring event as the top four drivers, Darren Kane, Ryan Alexander, Dave Gartner and Kodee Brown, were rarely separated with the drivers lapping the venue at a lightning pace.

    The race would turn on its head on lap 18 as the leaders attempted to lap Bill Miller, who was driving the Jamie Agius owned machine, with Gartner riding the right rear of Alexander’s car slamming the State Champion hard into the wall. After the incident Gartner was devastated and was lost for words as his Championship campaign came to an end.

    On the restart the race was quickly under a red light as Trevor Ware, who was now running fourth, rode out a massive barrel roll in turn three totally destroying his Insane Chassis. The incident forced the event to be shortened to 35 laps.

    The remaining laps were run with Kane holding onto the lead over Ryan Alexander with Kodee Brown, Mick Nicola and Michael Miller the only drivers on the lead lap.

  • Kevin Swindell Undergoes More Surgery

    Third-generation racer Kevin Swindell continues his recovery from significant injuries suffered Thursday night at Knoxville (Iowa) Raceway.

    Swindell underwent a second surgery on Monday at Des Moines Mercy Hospital and is making progress in his recovery. His father, hall of fame sprint car racer Sammy Swindell, posted the following statement on Twitter:

    “Kevin underwent a second surgery today at Des Moines Mercy Hospital to address one of two fractures suffered in his back following last week’s accident at Knoxville Raceway. Both surgeries have been successful and the doctors are heartened by his progress.

    “The doctors are also running tests on and monitoring a spinal cord injury that Kevin received during the accident.

    “We realize there is a long battle ahead, but Kevin has remained positive throughout the process and is prepared to fight to regain his health. We’re all hopeful for a Friday discharge and the next steps in recovery.”

    The statement continued, thanking the hospital staff who is treating Kevin Swindell and the fans who have shown support for the four-time Chili Bowl Midget Nationals winner:

    “We would like to especially thank the doctors, nurses and the staff at Des Moines Mercy Hospital for their outstanding work and the care they have provided Kevin. Additionally, we want to let the sprint car community and all of the fans who have reached out to the three of us know that we are grateful for your ongoing support, prayers and donations.

    “We remain optimistic about Kevin’s progress and will provide updates as they become available.”

  • Kevin Ward Jr. family files wrongful death lawsuit against Stewart

    The family of a young driver struck and killed by Tony Stewart's car on an upstate New York sprint racing track filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the NASCAR star Friday.

    The lawsuit was filed as Stewart returns to Watkins Glen International on the one-year anniversary of the fatal crash.

    The lawsuit accuses Stewart of gross negligence, saying he gunned his engine and put his car into a skid as 20-year-old Kevin Ward Jr. walked onto the track after a crash at Canandaigua Motorsports Park on Aug. 9, 2014. The car struck Ward, and he was killed.

    Ward Jr however was competing under the influence of a banned hallucinogenic substance and after the accident walked aggressively onto the track directly in the path of Stewarts moving car.

    A grand jury declined to indict Stewart, who at the time called it "100 percent an accident." There was no comment from Stewart, who was with his crew in the garage before a final practice Friday afternoon. Stewart-Haas Racing, the NASCAR Sprint Cup team Stewart co-owns, also declined comment.

    Ward's parents, Kevin and Pamela Ward, requested a jury trial seeking unspecified monetary damages, claiming wrongful death, reckless conduct, gross negligence and their son's terror and suffering.

    "Our son was truly the light of our lives and we miss him terribly every day," they said in a statement. "Our hope is that this lawsuit will hold Tony Stewart responsible for killing our son and show him there are real consequences when someone recklessly takes another person's life."

    There was no immediate comment from Stewart.

  • Kinser to Race in Australia

    It has been confirmed by multiple sources that Krag Kinser will be racing Downunder in the upcoming season.

    Schedule is a little sketchy but we hear he will be running in the car that a recently retired competitor vacated due to ongoing medial issues.

    Kraig Kinser, the oldest son of sprint car legend Steve Kinser, is the 2004 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year. Kinser has 16 series wins to his credit. His first World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series win came in 2004 at Cottage Grove (Ore.) Speedway. The following year Kinser won the Knoxville Nationals – he and Steve Kinser are the only father/son duo to ever win the coveted prize.

    After a brief hiatus in NASCAR, Kinser returned full-time to the World of Outlaws in 2008. In 2012, Kinser scored a, to date, career-high four wins.

    He returns in 2015 with his family owned Steve Kinser Racing.

  • Kinser to Undergo Surgery, Miss Aussie Summer

    Kraig Kinser driver of the 11K sprint car has likely concluded his season with the World of Outlaws for 2015 due to a reoccurring back injury caused by a previous racing incident.

    30-year-old Kinser was found to have two herniated disks in his lower back (L4/L5 and L5/S1), irritating his sciatic nerve. Kraig will undergo surgery this week with no specific date of his return to the 2015 World of Outlaws season.

    The SKR team has not yet confirmed the plans for the remainder of the season however Mikey Kuemper (Kraig’s brother-in-law and crew chief) will be steering the 11K until further arrangements have been made.

    The operation also throws his Australian Summer plans out the window as a lengthy recovery is in order.

    Kinser was marked to drive the s4 of South Australian Trevor Green in Sydney and then on to the Classic. Green will either have to keep current pilot Adam Wray in the car or find another suitable steerer .

  • Madsen Scores at Junction Motor Speedway

    After a season of podium finishes and consistent runs that had yet to result in a win, Kerry Madsen finally ended his year-long World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series winless drought with a victory at Junction Motor Speedway's NAPA Auto Parts Sprint Car Extravaganza presented by Mid-Nebraska Land Development on Tuesday night.

    Madsen led flag-to-flag at the track in McCool Junction, Neb. and became the 20th different driver to win an Outlaws feature this season.

    "We got on a roll last year and somehow we got off it," Madsen said. "And the last month we have been working so hard to try to get our racecars better and we had a great week last week and tonight. You can just never feel complacent when you're on the front row with Donny. I was pushing hard, there probably wasn't really another line, but you're just expecting some big slide job. So every lap you drive as hard as you can. Just great to get the result."

    Madsen, who came in to 2015 after a season that saw him in victory lane six times, last won an Outlaws feature on Sept. 7, 2014 at Antioch (Calif.) Speedway.

    Joey Saldana kicked off the night at Junction Motor Speedway by scoring his season-leading 13th quick time in qualifying and set a new track record of 13.528 seconds. Saldana's fast lap beat the old 13.586 second record set by Daryn Pittman in 2013.

    When the series hit the track for the 30-lap feature temperatures had fallen to an unusually cold 55 degrees and the challenge of the night was amped up with a sustained 10 mph wind.

    Madsen and Donny Schatz took up positions on the front row. Madsen jumped out to an early lead with Schatz trying to chase down the No. 29 American Racing Custom Wheels car.

    "I caught it really well and got (Donny) right where I wanted him in one and two, got the slider, we had that little bit of moisture in the bottom of three which made it easy," Madsen said of his move for the lead.

    He caught the back of the field by lap six and began working his way through.

    The only caution of the night flew on lap 11 and proved pivotal for Saldana who spent the early half of the race in third. When the green flag once again fell, Saldana battled Schatz through turns one and two and dove low in three and four, trying a slider on Schatz's No. 15 Bad Boy Buggies/Chevrolet Performance car for second. As the two cleared turn four, Saldana had taken over the position.

    "We just tried something there through three and four and it worked," Saldana said.

    Madsen again caught the back of the field on lap 18 and Saldana tried to close the gap on him. Madsen however had built up a persistent one and a half second lead.

    As the laps wound down, Schatz caught Saldana in traffic. On laps 27 and 28, Schatz tried to make the move around the No. 71m Motter Equipment car for second but, despite getting side-by-side, was not able to make it work.

    "We were fast there at the end of the night and were able to get up to Joe," said Schatz, who closed out the night with a third place finish. "It wasn't our best performance in a long time but we'll take it and lick our wounds and go on to the next one."

    Saldana, who finished the night in second, said his Motter Motorsports team is doing what they need to and the consistency is there, they just need to find that little something extra to put them over the top.

    "I felt like we had a really good car, it just came up short," Saldana said. "We'll take it and move on to the next race. We're a consistent car, we've just got to get a little bit better and a little out here is hard to do. We've just got to keep digging, doing what we're doing."

  • New Motorsport Complex for Brisbane/Gold Coast

    One of South–East Queensland’s largest motorsport projects is underway. “Loves Speedway and motorsport complex”, is set to create history, being the first multipurpose motorsport park in Australia. Strategically located between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, Loves Speedway and motorsport complex is earmarked to host local, national and international events.

    Our vision is to become the hub for automotive based activities including Speedway, 1/8 Mile Street legal drag racing, Burnout competitions, Go-kart and Drift Tracks, Car shows, Monster Trucks, Stunt Shows and Super Cross and Motorcross events. It will also cater to more than 40 competitive sports and provide a large exhibition area for outdoor shows and events.

    With a ‘fans first’ approach to planning and design, the stadium will offer an unrivaled spectator experience. Once completed, the complex will feature corporate facilities, meeting rooms, club house, catering services, medical facilities’, state of the art L.E.D lighting, and large display screen.

    The “Loves speedway and motorsport complex” project will be built at no cost to local rate payers or taxpayers alike. This facility will create local jobs, and generate millions of dollars in annual revenue for the city. The local community will also benefit from regular charity and non-profit organised events. These events have been encouraged by the local authorities, aimed at reducing community crime and driving related offenses.

    The consortium behind this exciting new development is made up of the current management team from Archerfield Speedway, John and Kathy Kelly. John and Kathy are well recognised promoters and accomplished competitors. Local Businessmen, Scott Wilson and David Grose, will also join this duo to support and create this facility. Our goal is to provide a complete venue for competitors, their families, friends, and spectators looking for local entertainment. This project will ensure a bright future for motorsport in South East Queensland.

  • Perth Motorplex To Remain Open

    Facility owner, VenuesWest will take over interim management of Perth Motorplex from 1 July 2016 following the decision of the current operator, Kwinana Motorplex Pty Ltd to withdraw from management of the venue.

    Kwinana Motorplex Pty Ltd had tendered last year to continue it association of the motorsport venue which it won.  For the last 10 months, both parties negotiated a new contract.

    At the 11th hour and without notice, Kwinana Motorplex Pty Ltd notified VenuesWest that it was not going to sign the new agreement and was in fact pulling out completely.

    VenuesWest has owned the venue on behalf of the State Government since 2000 and has a long history of venue management across other well-known Perth sport and entertainment venues such as HBF Stadium, HBF Arena, Midvale SpeedDome, WA Athletics Stadium, Bendat Basketball Centre and nib Stadium.

    VenuesWest CEO, David Etherton said that a VenuesWest management solution provided the best short term solution available to ensure the continued success and viability of Perth Motorplex.

    “VenuesWest will take over management of Perth Motorplex from 1 July 2016 for a period of up to two years, allowing the Perth motorsports community to continue to compete in and enjoy their racing.” Mr Etherton said.

    “When the venue reopens, following the usual winter closure, I have every confidence, that with the assistance of the motorsport community, we will deliver a safe and operational venue.”

    VenuesWest will immediately seek to engage a long term management solution by way of open-market tender.

    Mr Etherton went on to explain, “This is a great venue and we want the best possible operator to run the venue, so a competitive process will be run. The negotiation of any major long term contract takes time and is a detailed process, hence the interim management period by VenuesWest.”

    Perth Motorplex receives around 235,000 visitors annually to compete in 80 regular drag racing and speedway events and to experience several major entertainment events throughout the year.

    Over the coming weeks VenuesWest will actively engage with existing staff, relevant stakeholders, sanctioning bodies and venue suppliers to ensure that Perth Motorplex continues to be at the forefront of racing.

  • Pierce Powers Hell Tour Win at Belle-Clair

    Bobby Pierce powered from pole to checkers on Wednesday night at Belle-Clair Speedway to earn his second DIRTcar Summer Nationals victory of the season.

    Pierce, who leads the tour’s championship battle, held off Rodney Melvin midway through the 40-lap main event and fought off Shannon Babb down the stretch to earn the $5,000 victory.

    Babb, whose two-race win streak ended with Pierce’s win, Melvin, Ryan Unzicker and former Summer Nationals champion Brandon Sheppard rounded out the top five.

    “It feels really good,” said Pierce, of Oakwood, Ill., who also won last year’s DIRTcar Summer Nationals event at Belle-Clair. “This is starting to become one of my favorite tracks. I’m really good at these little bullrings. You can get up on the cushion and get a good run off.”

    The DIRTcar Summer Nationals tour heads to Clarksville (Tenn.) Speedway on Thursday night.

  • Richards Edges Clanton In Thrilling Finish At Brighton

    Josh Richards was fast all night at Saturday's Dibbits Excavating and Vanderlaan Building Products Mud Slinger 50 presented by Excel Tower Service at Brighton Speedway. But in the final 10 laps, the three-time World of Outlaws Late Model Series champion needed more patience than speed to claim his fourth series victory of the season.

    After leading from the start of the 50-lap race, Richards, 27, of Shinnston, W.Va., expertly picked his way through heavy traffic during the race's closing laps and held off points leader Shane Clanton's furious late charge to win the second round of the Great Northern Tour in a side-by-side finish at the third-mile oval.

    "It was all about patience tonight," said Richards, who earned the 53rd WoO LMS victory of his career in just the second series race ever held at the Ontario track. "I just stayed really patient because there was really nowhere to go.

    "I knew Shane was coming and we kept getting boxed in. I saw Shane at the white flag, but I knew if I could just keep my speed up and not have (a lapped car) push up into me I could win it."

    Clanton of Zebulon, Ga., nearly pulled off the last-lap pass when Richards was forced to drive to the high side of the slower machine of Boom Briggs entering turn three, but the low line was blocked just enough by Briggs to slow Clanton's run off the corner. Richards edged back ahead to claim a $10,650 victory by a thin margin of 0.142 seconds.

    The victory was a nice rebound for Richards, who finished seventh in the Great Northern Tour opener at Fonda (N.Y.) Speedway on Thursday after an engine problem forced him to start from the tail of the main event in a backup car.

    With Clanton winning the Fonda race and scoring points in the championship chase, Richards was happy to regain at least a few points on Saturday. He heads into round three of the Great Northern Tour at Cornwall (Ont.) Motor Speedway on Sunday 94 points behind Clanton.

    "I feel like we've had a really fast car most of the year, but we've just had a lot of bad breaks like what happened at Fonda," said Richards, who thanked the crew on his Valvoline-sponsored Rocket Chassis house car team for their hard work repairing the issues from Thursday to get ready for Saturday's race. "Shane's been really fast and consistent. We've just got to focus on winning races and finishing up front. It felt really good to get a win tonight and pick up some points, even if it was only a few."

    Clanton settled for the runner-up spot in notching his 15th top-five finish in 18 races this season. Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., crossed the finish line third, well behind the lead battle. Morgan Bagley of Longview, Texas, was just behind McCreadie in fourth with Rick Eckert of York, Pa., rounding out the top five.

    Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., was sixth at the finish, while Ross Robinson of Georgetown, Del., advanced from the 11th starting spot to finish seventh. Eric Wells of Hazard, Ky., finished eighth with Chase Junghans of Manhattan, Kan., ninth and Gregg Satterlee of Indiana, Pa., 10th.

    Gunning for what would have been his second straight WoO LMS victory and his sixth on the season, Clanton challenged Richards through the middle portions of the race and gave all he had to catch Richards in the closing laps. But his Weldbank Energy Capital Race Cars house car came up half a car short of completing the winning pass.

    "I tried the top, bottom, middle - it didn't matter," Clanton said of his late-race bid for the lead. "We were doing all we could to get by him, but he was just a bit better in lapped traffic.

    "I got to running the top and caught him a little bit, but then I think I hurt my tires and got them a little too hot. I caught him at the end when he got boxed in behind those cars and made a valiant effort on the last lap."

    The race was slowed by four cautions. The first appeared with two laps complete for a tangle back in the pack involving Jim Bernheisel of Lebanon, Pa., and Steve Baldwin of Trenton, Ont. Another yellow flag waved just after the restart for the slowing machine of Charlie Sandercock of Belleville, Ont. A lap-8 caution was for Union, Ky., driver Darrell Lanigan's brief adventure off the banking in turn four, and a flat tire for Bernheisel brought out the final caution with nine laps complete.

    WoO LMS competitors move to another Canada oval on Sunday in Cornwall (Ont.) Motor Speedway for round three of the Great Northern Tour. The four-race trek concludes on Tuesday with a visit to Weedsport (N.Y.) Speedway.

    The Great Northern Tour serves as a precursor to one of the season's biggest race weekends in Lernerville Speedway's ninth annual Firecracker 100 presented by GottaRace.com. The crown jewel event features three nights of WoO LMS action kicking off Thursday, June 25. It all builds toward the 100-lap, $30,000-to-win Firecracker 100 finale on Saturday, June 27.

  • Richards Sweeps Prairie Dirt Classic Weekend

    Josh Richards completed the “Prairie Dirt Classic” sweep Saturday night in front of a packed house, winning the 100-lap finale at Fairbury American Legion Speedway. The victory was Richards’ 11th of the season and his 69th of his career in the series.

    “To win this race at Fairbury, it’s one I’ve always looked forward to,” Richards said. “It’s cool to finally get one.”

    Richards, starting 11th in the feature, worked his way to the top gradually. While he was in the pursuit of the podium, race leader Steve Casebolt – who led the field into the green flag – established himself on the top cushion of the 1/4-mile oval.

    In the opening laps, Casebolt extended his lead to nearly four seconds, while the trio of drivers behind him spanned three-wide among the width of the track. On lap 15, Casebolt broke into lapped traffic – using the nose of his car to wedge himself through the field. Don O’Neal capitalized on the three-way battle, side-skirting the completion into second position. O’Neal used the bottom of the track for the majority of the race.

    Tim McCreadie, who was one of the players in the three-car shootout, was able to break away from the other two. He challenged O’Neal for the runner-up spot. O’Neal had nothing for McCreadie, losing the battle. All the while, Richards gained enough momentum to challenge a fading O’Neal for the third spot; Richards eventually won the battle. Back-to-back cautions not only instantly diminished Casebolt’s 3.664-second lead, but his car experienced mechanical problems prompting the second caution. It took him out of contention as he could not finish the race.

    Richards used the top groove as his route to the top, though in the process his No. 1 Valvoline/ Seubert Calf Ranches Rocket car suffered some minor left-rear body damage. Illinois-native Bobby Pierce followed suit, riding the cushion with Richards. The nose of Pierce’s car ended up pitching the car airborne, causing another caution to regroup the field.

    On the restart, Richards secured the top of the track, and McCreadie and O’Neal soon revisited their battle below him. Shane Clanton and his No. 25 Weldbank Energy/ Coopers Meat Packers Capital car entered the battle three laps into the halfway point of the race. Again, a three-way battle was to determine who would take second position. The battle lasted nearly 10 laps, but Clanton came out on top.

    Following the battle, McCreadie fell back into fourth position with Dennis Erb Jr.’s No. 28E J.R. McBride Leasing/ McBride Mack Black Diamond nipping at his heels. With 40 laps remaining, Erb overtook McCreadie for third position; O’Neal lost enough momentum battling Richards, which left the door open for Erb and Clanton to pass him from both sides of the track. Erb was next to challenge Richards following the race’s final caution with 26 laps remaining, but he came up short.

    “We just had one heck of a race at the end,” Erb said. “I have a lot of respect for [Josh] and these other guys out here. We all wanted to race hard, and we all want to win. But we have to go out there and respect each other, too. It could have went either way. We’re just happy to come home with second.”

    Richards relived a similar fight for first from earlier this season at “The Dream.” Erb ended up passing Richards that night, winning the event. Richards evened-up the score at Fairbury.

    “I’ll tell you, [Dennis] is one of the best guys in the country with these long races,” Richards said. “He paced himself around the bottom and I saw him a couple of times. The top was good early, and when you’re leading you’re sometimes a sitting duck. This track had not one preferred groove.”

    Though Richards did not build a comfort zone between Erb and Clanton for the next 30 laps, the closest the two ever got to him was 0.498 of a second. Erb and Clanton battled briefly for the second spot, but Erb was able to keep Clanton at bay. From there, the podium did not change.

    “The outside was treacherous,” said Clanton, who could not overtake Erb in the final laps. “It was overall a good weekend. Hopefully we can keep running consistent top five finishes, and the wins will take care of themselves.”

    Jonathan Davenport, who won the non-qualifier, opted to forfeit the $2,000 purse to be added to the 100-lap feature. Dvenport finished 28th.

  • Rico Abreu the Strongest Man in Ironman 55 Win

    Rico Abreu proved to be the strongest man Saturday night at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 as he powered forward and battled to the lead scoring his first World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victory of the season and the Federated Auto Parts Ironman 55 presented by Walker.

    Abreu, a NASCAR Truck Series regular, slipped back to fifth early but battled back into the top three after a lap 26 restart. He worked his way around the No. 9 of Daryn Pittman then set his sights on the No. 49 of Brad Sweet. Sweet bobbled coming off of turn four and Abreu raced past him onto the front straight.

    Through traffic, the then leader Kerry Madsen lost ground to Abreu and Sweet. On lap 38 Abreu threw a slider on Madsen through turns three and four, but Madsen held. What commenced though was a two-lap, three-way battle for the lead. Abreu eventually got around and through restarts, traffic and a brush with the wall on the final lap, Abreu cruised to the Ironman 55 win.

    "It's really important. These big ones is what it comes down to. All that hard work all year that these guys have done," Abreu said. "I raced my ass off. It's fun, it all pays off."

    Abreu is the 16th different winner of the season and the sixth different driver to score the Ironman 55 title. Since 2009, Craig Dollansky is the only driver to repeat.

    Sweet kicked off the night with his second straight quick time award in qualifying. His 11th quick time made him the season's leading qualifier, surpassing Joey Saldana who held the distinction through much of the year.

    Madsen, the 2014 Ironman 55 winner, started on the feature pole with with 2015's Ironman winner, Shane Stewart, on his outside.

    When the green flag fell, Sweet, who started fourth, battled forward, taking over third on the initial start and then racing Stewart, side-by-side on lap 10 for second. Two laps later, as Madsen worked his way through traffic, Sweet closed the gap on the leader and began challenging him for the lead.

    A caution flew and on the restart Madsen pulled away, this time maintaining his top spot through the traffic. When the next caution flag fell on lap 26, Madsen had lapped up to 16th position.

    Abreu, who had been sitting in fourth through much of the feature, got his chance on the restart, as he took over third from Pittman and then took advantage of Sweet's mistake on the exit of four to take over second.

    On lap 39, again slowed by traffic, Abreu caught Madsen and slid him through turns three and four. It was not enough that lap, but setup a three-way battle for position with Sweet mixing it up, nearly side-by-side-by-side across the line on lap 40. Abreu displayed masterful maneuvering across the track as he took over the lead and, in spite of the strong challenge from Madsen and near disaster at the end, crossed the finish line in first.

    To chants of, "Rico, Rico, Rico," from a packed Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55, Abreu hoisted the coveted dumbbell trophy and claimed the $20,000 prize.

    "We started off pretty tight in the beginning of the race. The tighter our car is, it tends to bog our engine which makes it confusing to know what to do," Abreu said. "I was just trying to maintain my tires underneath me. When I got to those guys I made sure I didn't race them too hard. You can get in an intense battle and heat your tires up and end up running fifth or sixth. I just made sure I hit my marks. The restarts were really important tonight."

    Abreu ended the two-year run of Kings Royal winners also taking the Ironman victory. The win is his fourth career series win.

    Madsen, who looked to become just the second repeat winner of the Ironman 55, led the first 40 laps of the grueling 55-lap feature. In the end though, Abreu had the edge.

    "The guys gave me a fantastic racecar. Just got into traffic there and I just - guy had been running the top and I thought I had him and then he chopped the front and Rico was there to take advantage. This race is always one of our favorites of the year - the fan interaction is fantastic."

    Stewart battled past Sweet through the closing laps and took home the final spot on the night's podium. He said the podium finish was needed for his Larson Marks crew as their performance has not been where they want it to be.

    "We've been on struggle street really badly lately," Stewart said. "It was a really great race. Normally you try to pace yourself a little but there was no pacing. This is a great event, it's a special race to win. Hats off to Rico, he does a great job."

    "Hopefully we can carry this momentum, not only into Knoxville, but into the rest of the season."

    Joey Saldana was the KSE Racing Hard Charger, advancing nine positions to finish fifth.

  • Schatz Wins 9th Knoxville Nationals

    If anyone had any doubts as to whether or not Donny Schatz was going to earn his ninth Knoxville Nationals title, the North Dakota native made a statement by leading 50 laps flag-to-flag to win the 55th running of the FVP Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Store.

    Making wholesale moves through traffic in the closing laps, Donny was asked about the very close passes, “It’s not the traffic that was bothering me. It was the restarts. It’s my job to get through traffic. If I can’t then I’m probably going to lose my job. The past couple weeks, seem like people get a run on you and can slide you, so you just had to do something different. One time I’d go to the bottom, one time I’d go to the top and keep mixing it up, but it’s hard to do that without mixing yourself up.”

    “The boss was here tonight. Can’t thank him [Tony Stewart] enough for all the support to allow us to be with Bad Boy Buggies, Chevrolet Performance, and all our marketing partners to do what we love to do.”

    Taking off from the pole, Donny Schatz jumped to the lead with Kerry Madsen in tow. Working low on the Knoxville Raceway, the Tony Stewart Racing No. 15 was joined by the No. 29 of Kerry Madsen who railed the cushion.

    Closing on the lead on the third rotation, Madsen continued to build momentum, pulling to the back bumper Schatz off the fourth turn as the No. 15 swapped lines to the high side down the front stretch to block the run of the American Racing Custom Wheels No. 29.

    Keeping Donny within sight as the leaders hit traffic on Lap 10, the Bad Boy Buggies No. 15 found roads blocked, allowing Madsen to close in once again. With a full head of steam on Lap 12, Donny put a pair of slower cars between him and Madsen; leaving the Aussie to contend with Danny Lasoski.

    Coming from sixth, the GoMuddy.com No. 2 worked cushion to hub on the Knoxville Raceway, trading second with Madsen as the caution flew on Lap 16 for the No. 41 of Jason Johnson who shredded the left rear tire.

    Underway, Madsen kept pace into the first two turns with Lasoski in line. Unable to do anything with the No. 15, the race for second saw Lasoski taking the spot on Lap 25, just as the field came to the mid-point break.

    Changing gears on the No. 15 during the five minute break, Schatz took the high line with Danny charging low. Unable to advance to the lead, Donny began pulling away as Danny worked to hold his second position, but would slip to fourth on Lap 32 as Kerry Madsen flew by on the cushion with Brad Sweet taking the low line.

    Watching as the No. 15 pulled away with a 2.104 second advantage, the red flag flew on Lap 35 for the No. 51 of Paul McMahan who tripped the cushion in turn four battling for eighth with Bryan Clauson. Quick work by the Pit Crew put the CJB Motorsports No. 51 back on track for the restart.

    Splitting lines on the restart, Madsen again could not make work of the No. 15, but again had to contend with Brad Sweet. Working low on Lap 37, Brad Sweet all but had Madsen cleared, only to see the No. 29 squeeze between his Right Rear Tire and the wall.

    Going back and forth for the runner-up spot, the pair kept Schatz within seven tenths of a second as the caution waved again on Lap 40.

    Again keeping Schatz to under a second advantage, the pair worked to traffic on Lap 48 with Schatz boxed in by back markers. With the center line barely open, Donny threaded the needle, putting the finishing touches on his ninth FVP Knoxville Nationals victory; crossing 1.363 seconds ahead of Kerry Madsen.

    “I tried as hard as possible to get it done. I got behind him in dirty air and was just was jumping around on the cushion like an idiot, but I wasn’t going to leave anything on the table,” said Madsen. “I thought it was on there. I thought I had a quicker car and I just apologize for not getting the job done but he didn’t make a mistake the last 15 laps. I was ready to pounce, but it didn’t happen.”

    Holding on for third was Brad Sweet after a hard battle with the No. 29.

    “I tell you what this is a huge step in the right direction for Kasey Kahne Racing and the Ollie’s Bargain Barn Outlet. The car was really good. We hit on some stuff at the Front Row Challenge and we carried some momentum into here and when the time to hit it right in the A-Main was right, we hit it. I really didn’t want to see those yellows because I really felt like we were more maneuverable than the guys in front of us, but hats off to Donny. He makes it really hard to win this race.”

    Coming on strong in the second half of the feature event, Shane Stewart came from 12th to fourth with Joey Saldana completing the top-five. From 14th, Brian Brown crossed sixth with Daryn Pittman going from 15th to seventh. Having battled up front for so many laps, Danny Lasoski slipped to finish eighth with Lucas Wolfe ninth and Greg Hodnett earning hard-charger honros in tenth from the 23rd starting spot.
